Here is a bit more info about David’s America Project:
David Clerihew’s America is the result of 12 years spent travelling across the United States, capturing the nation’s culture and contradictions. Influenced by artists such as Richard Avedon and Robert Frank, Clerihew’s work explores the diversity of American life, with an emphasis on the country’s complex relationship with gun ownership.
Through over one hundred portraits, shot against plain backdrops, Clerihew offers a visual census of America, highlighting individuals from all walks of life. His landscapes, inspired by the cinematic style of the Coen Brothers, showcase the ordinary yet iconic spaces that shape American society, from street corners to vast vistas – evoking the enduring symbol of the American dream.
Gun ownership and the violence associated with it became a recurring theme in America. Clerihew’s project coincided with multiple mass shootings during his travels, forcing him to confront the stark realities of this national issue. His work raises questions about the meaning of freedom in a nation where firearms are a symbol of both liberty and violence.
